Peter Blackstock
One of San Diego’s most prominent singer-songwriters, Petite won the country/Americana album category at the San Diego Music Awards for her last two releases.
Her newest record is arguably her best yet. Produced by longtime Bernie Taupin collaborator Josquin Des Prés — the two co-wrote the last song here, “In the Name of Dark Angels” — HerStory gathers some ofPetite’s most lively and affecting songs to date.
The album’s subtitle refers to three of its standout tracks. “I Hate Snakes,” co-written with Des Prés, is a seductively rhythmic retelling of the Adam and Eve story, from Eve’s perspective. “She Runs With The Wolves” is a women’s anthem of sorts — “basically about how feminine energy has a lot more high intuition,” Petite told me in a recent interview.
And “Honky Tonk Angels”celebrates some of her fellow travelers in music such as Chloe Lou andLauren Leigh, both of whom appear on the album. And while Petite feels most at home with country-folk tunes, she’s plenty willing to ratchet up the energy on the twangy rockers “Wasted” and “The Misfits.”
